Senior lady and younger woman sitting and talking happilyInformation for Caregivers

The senior center provides respite care. This gives the caregiver a break while a trained employee or volunteer cares for your loved one. That person arrives at a designated time, socializes, and takes part in activities and supervise.

This time allows the caregiver to receive a break and helps keep the love one active. In addition, nutritional council is provided at the Senior Center on the first Wednesday of each month at 11 a.m. EST. The Senior Citizens Council of Madison County has other free and fee based programs that can assist you with respite and companionship services.

Caregivers Support Group

Studies show that care giving takes a toll on physical and emotional health. Caregivers are more likely to suffer from depression than their peers. With this Support Group the Caregiver can get immediate support from others like you, create and share how your life has changed, how are you coping, learn about medical treatments and ways to cope. The Support Group is held at the Senior Center on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 1:30 p.m. Contact 1-850-973-4241 for more information.

Tips For Caregivers

Care giving can be a demanding but rewarding opportunity. Remember, don't hesitate to ask for help. There are people in your community (friends, churches, faith based organizations, the senior center, civic organizations etc) that may want to help. You should make the move and ask for help. You will be glad that you did. Friends and associates have been proven to be a positive relief from the stress associated with care giving. In addition consider taking a break from time to time and :

* Go out to dinner or seeing a movie with the girls/guys etc.
* Go in your room or out side, sit in a swing, relax and read a book
* Go dancing
* Go to Sunday School or Bible study
* Continue to or participate in community activities

It is also important to learn as much as you can about how to care for your love one. Learn about his or her condition and how to manage it. Know what to expect and learn how your love one's condition may change as this will prepare you for the future. In addition utilize the library, web, support groups and information available through the Senior Center as educational resources. Never forget, if in doubt, contact us for help.
